Best move
Chess can end in a draw by stalemate, a dead position or agreement. Threefold repetition and the fifty-move rule allow a claim; fivefold repetition and seventy-five moves trigger an automatic draw, with checkmate taking precedence on the last move.
Try the moves
Choose an example, play the suggested move, then reset to compare another legal move.
Repeated positions require the same player to move and the same legal possibilities, including castling and en passant rights.
A fifty-move claim requires no pawn move or capture in the relevant fifty moves by each player; it is not the automatic seventy-five-move rule.
Insufficient material
King against king is a dead position: neither player can checkmate by any legal sequence. Dead positions are drawn immediately; they are not stalemate.
