Fool's Mate is the checkmate after 1.f3 e5 2.g4 Qh4#. White's f- and g-pawn moves expose the diagonal to the king. Replay the moves, then deliver Black's queen checkmate on h4.

Fool's Mate is the shortest checkmate from the normal starting position: Black can finish on the second move. Replay 1.f3 e5 2.g4 and stop before Black's reply. White's f-pawn left f2 and the g-pawn left g2, opening the diagonal from h4 through g3 and f2 to the king on e1. Play Qh4#. Black's queen uses that clear diagonal to give check, while White's own pieces leave no legal way to block, capture or move the king.
After the queen lands, try moving White's king from e1 to f2. The board refuses it: f2 lies on the queen's attacking diagonal. The other apparent escapes fail as well, which makes this checkmate rather than an ordinary check. If White had not advanced both kingside pawns in this way, this exact two-move finish would not be available. The lesson is about the exposed king, not a line Black can force against careful play.
A player facing an early queen move should look at the queen's line toward their king before making another pawn move. Ask whether a piece can block the line, whether the queen can be captured, and where the king could legally go after a check. In this replay the answer to all three is nowhere. The move sequence is a teaching example, not advice to push the f- and g-pawns in your own opening. Return to the start and check exactly which two pawn moves created the gap.
