The Catalan combines White's d4 and c4 pawns with a kingside fianchetto, usually against ...Nf6 and ...e6. White's bishop on g2 presses along the long diagonal; Black chooses whether to hold or capture the c4 pawn. Compare Open and Closed Catalan positions below.

Ideas, plans and common mistakes
White's d4 and c4 pawns claim central space while g3 and Bg2 put the light-squared bishop on the long diagonal. This is positional pressure on Black's center and queenside, not a forced kingside attack. Several move orders reach the setup, so identify the pawn structure as well as the label.
White can press against the d5 pawn from g2, recover a captured c4 pawn in some Open Catalan lines, or accept temporary pawn loss for activity along the diagonal. In a Closed Catalan, White often works for a small positional edge with patient piece moves. The saved transposition from 1.c4 shows why the move order is not unique.
Black can take on c4 and ask White to prove the bishop's compensation, reinforce d5 with ...c6 to close the diagonal, or avoid a standard Catalan center with an early ...c5. These are three different defensive jobs. Follow the exact saved line before treating a score from one as advice for another.
The central structure is White pawns on d4 and c4 against Black's ...d5 and ...e6, unless the c4 pawn is captured or Black changes the center. Two pitfalls are assuming the c4 pawn is always recoverable at once and calling every g3 position a Catalan after Black has steered into another opening.
Open the matching board row to see which pawn is still on c4 and whether the g2 bishop has a clear diagonal. That visual check is more useful than memorising a variation name alone.
