The Ponziani is White's 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.c3 setup. White wants d4 next, building a central pawn pair; Black can answer with immediate central play or pressure on e4. Compare those replies in the saved positions below.

Ideas, plans and common mistakes
White uses 3.c3 to support d4 and make room for the queen along the d1-a4 diagonal. This gives a direct central plan instead of entering the Italian or Ruy Lopez. The cost is concrete: c3 is no longer available to White's queenside knight, so development needs care.
White's first plan is d4 when Black allows it. Against ...Nf6, White can build that center even while e4 is attacked. Against ...d5, Qa4 can pin the c6 knight and pressure e5 in the Steinitz line. These positions ask different questions of Black; the saved boards let you compare both move orders.
Black can develop with ...Nf6 and attack e4 before White has played d4, strike at once with ...d5, or choose the sharper ...f5 countergambit. Black's second job is to avoid letting White gain an uncontested pawn pair on e4 and d4. The response should be chosen from the actual position, not from the opening name.
The structure often begins with opposing e-pawns and a White c3 pawn supporting d4. If the center opens, the unavailable c3 square slows White's queenside-knight development; if it stays closed, White must find another route for that piece. Two pitfalls are assuming the d4 push cannot be challenged and ignoring the e4 attack after ...Nf6.
The Ponziani Countergambit begins with 3...f5. In the saved depth-16 position, White has more than one playable reply; that is a reason to examine the countergambit, not to call it a forced win for either player. Open the row for the exact score and continuation.
