The pawn on e5 looks free. That's the trap. Black's knight on c6 already guards it. Play Nxe5 and black just recaptures, Nxe5, and White has no piece that can take back: the bishop on c4 doesn't reach e5, and neither does anything else. White's best try is d4, kicking the knight for a tempo, but black just retreats it (to c6 or g6, both safe) and stays up a full knight for one pawn. A raw eval bar might flash a number for a split second before the engine finishes calculating, but a good AI trainer skips straight to the point: "Nxe5 looks like a free pawn, but c6 defends it and you have no clean way to get it back: you'd be giving up a knight for a pawn." That explanation turns an engine line into something you'll remember next game.
Layer 3: Personalization. This one is newer and harder. The best AI trainers adapt the explanation to your rating. A 1200 who just hung a piece in one move needs "you left your knight undefended – any piece that attacks it next turn wins it." A 1900 who hung the same piece to a three-move sequence needs "the knight looked safe, but after Bg4 pinning your queen, the defender was overloaded." Same mistake, different lesson. 1. Engine grounding – is it checking a real board or guessing?
