Ideas, plans and common mistakes
Black's 5...a6 stops a knight or bishop from landing on b5 and prepares ...b5. It also keeps the central pawn choice flexible: ...e5 takes space, while ...e6 supports a different structure. That flexibility is the point of the move, so a Najdorf label alone is not a complete plan.
White can develop Bg5 to pressure the f6 knight, build the English Attack with Be3, f3 and Qd2 before a kingside pawn advance, or choose Be2 with kingside castling and a slower buildup. These plans put different pressure on Black's center. White's development lead can become an attack if Black spends too many moves on the queenside.
Black can advance ...b5 and sometimes ...b4 to create queenside counterplay, play ...e5 when its control of d5 is acceptable, or choose ...e6 and keep more control over d5. The open c-file is another source of activity after Black's c-pawn captures on d4. Watch which center Black actually builds.
The Open Sicilian exchanges White's d-pawn for Black's c-pawn, leaving Black a semi-open c-file. A typical Najdorf center has Black's d6 pawn and either an e5 or e6 pawn against White's e4 pawn. Two pitfalls are ignoring White's kingside attack while expanding with ...b5, and assuming ...e5 is safe in every 6th-move setup.
The saved Adams Attack and Dekker Gambit are different board positions. Their depth-16 scores can compare candidate replies at those exact points; they cannot establish a universal refutation of an opening family.
